Happy Spring B-HIPsters!
What a delightful spring it is (despite the cold) because the playground is nearly ready!
We are pleased to announce a grand re-opening celebration on Saturday, May 3, 2008. Celebratory details will be forthcoming.
In preparation for the grand re-opening Pat McClure and his trusty crew are busy installing the pathway rails, placing the wood chips, cleaning the bronze pavers, and testing the lighting & irrigation systems. In addition, the Seattle Parks department is scheduled to paint the swings (the metal bars) and install a picnic table.
If you are wondering why the project has taken longer than expected, well, we hit a few boulders! There were significant irrigation issues that needed to be addressed requiring the attention of various parties within the Seattle Parks department. Once the issues were addressed it became a question of funding. Later, a second issue with the merry-go-round arose. Much to the team’s dismay, we had no choice but to have the original merry-go-round removed. Fortunately, and thankfully, Pamela Kliment, Neighborhood Matching Fund Liaison, came through for our park. She secured the necessary funds for the irrigation and a new merry-go-round. As a bonus, Parks also provided a picnic table for our park. Thank you Pamela Kliment, and the Seattle Parks Department!
I should also mention that the department of Urban Forestry within Seattle Parks & Recreation will be replacing the two trees that were lost due disease; look for new plantings this Fall. Thank you Lana Krisman, Urban Forestry, for providing the resources for the trees!
BHIP future goals:
- Raise money for a second picnic table for installation in the center donor circle ($2,500)
- Select and raise money for the 1-4 play equipment. In the next few weeks, we will post to the website pictures of the 1-4 play area equipment. We will send an update so that you may vote on which piece you would like to see in the new 1-4 play area.
- Raise money for the Zip Line.
If you would like to donate, or volunteer to assist in phase two fundraising, please contact the B-HIP steering committee at b-hipbighoweorg, or mail your donation directly to B-HIP - c/o Don Harper - 2723 4th Ave W - Seattle, WA 98119.
Please stay tuned for further details on our upcoming grand re-opening of Big Howe Park!
Sincerely,
Eleni LedesmaBHIP Co Chair
