A view of the new playground

Project Description

Big Howe Playground, also referred to as the West Queen Anne Playground, is Queen Anne’s largest, most centrally located and frequently used play area. This playground is used year-round by thousands of children. Its condition, however, is rapidly deteriorating. The Big Howe Improvement Project will replace aging play equipment and create new landscaping surrounding the play area.

It is the project’s mission to engage our community in the design, development and funding of a new play area that will inspire creative play, integrate beautifully into the surrounding environment and be an asset to our city for years to come.

As of Spring 2007, the project has completed the design, planning, construction documentation and the project is out to bid. The playground design (see below) has been reviewed both by community members in a series of public meetings, and has been signed off on by the Parks Department. We hope to begin, and complete, construction by the end of the summer. Construction will require a combination of professional and volunteer community installation. Once we have received construction bids and selected a contractor, our Steering Committee will be focused on raising the final funds, both in cash donations as well as in in-kind donations, to bring these plans from dream to reality.
